Fretboard Crack!!

Instruments- discuss specific features, luthiers, instrument problems & questions

Purchased a beautiful dulcimer that needs a little TLC! It has a crack at the nut on the headstock, any suggestions on where to start when it comes in?

Neat little story...

General mountain dulcimer or music discussions

Was it also a Galax dulcimer? The one made in 1800?

Soundboard identification!

Instruments- discuss specific features, luthiers, instrument problems & questions

Danny, I just might take you up on that offer haha! And Ken, I never had a good nose, unless it was cattle yard or gasoline... Might see if I can bribe the girlfriend into a sniff test!
I was contemplating sending a message to Cedar Creek, don't know if anyone knew but a guy around my age or younger is running it. And he and his wife seem like really nice people...

I think you both are right! It is lighter, and louder, than my similar mode with a purple heart top...

Soundboard identification!

Instruments- discuss specific features, luthiers, instrument problems & questions

Hello,
My friends recently found me a 2002 Cedar Creek at a local auction. It plays great but I am curious about what the sound board is made of? It looks like white oak to me but I figured I would let the real experts have a look too! Thanks in advance!

New Tax Return Project!

Instruments- discuss specific features, luthiers, instrument problems & questions

Well Rob, I hope it will be a good player when I finish the repairs! It is a pretty solid chunk of wood and I love that it is a satin finish... Anybody have suggestions for tuners and their installation? Keep in mind this will be a budget repair! I thought of getting those open geared tuners that run like $15 for four, like what they use on cigar box guitars?

Thanks Steven! I love finding instruments that need a little work... My girlfriend has a 7 yr. old Little from BBBS, and I'm trying to get her interested in playing, just for fun! :)

Ken,
I do believe it to be mahogany, but was a little hesitant due to it being all of the same wood. And was a $50 shop find, I saw no cracks and the body was all solid wood, so I pulled the trigger!

New Tax Return Project!

Found a nice dulcimer that needed a new home! Three string, all solid wood(what kind I'm not sure of...), and needing new tuners and bridge. But should be fun! The weirdest thing, the frets are just wires...

Moment with the Master, Warren May!

I know a lot of seasoned players have probably seen this but for newer members who are learning about builders, history, and building... This might be interesting! Skip ahead to the 24 minute mark!

Changing tuners on a Warren May dulcimer.

Instruments- discuss specific features, luthiers, instrument problems & questions

Thank you all for the helpful responses! And Dan Goad, that video would be much appreciated! Last year when I took my pre-revival dulcimer to the local music shop to get strings changed, it was a little unsettling...  The 30 something yr. old instrument tech, in his favorite Pantera/Dimebag Darrel t-shirt, basically didn't know what he was looking at! And 30 minutes later I shelled out almost $30, but hey, it still plays a tune!

Changing tuners on a Warren May dulcimer.

Instruments- discuss specific features, luthiers, instrument problems & questions

Ok so, I get the purity of keeping the original tuners in place, and I do love the thing, so selling it is out of the question. But sometimes it takes a good 5 minutes to get it in unison! The local guitar guys are metal heads so I don't know if I trust them for maintenance or advice... Also, maybe if one of you more knowledgeable members have time, a tutorial on string changing with pegs would help us newbies! Do you tie the string around the shafts of the peg, similar to tying a knot on a nylon string guitar?

Hello, hope everyone had a good Labor Day! I was thinking of changing the tuners on my Warren May, but I don't want to put screw holes or alter the instrument. Is that possible? Any tuner suggestions?

Tell us about your VERY FIRST dulcimer

General mountain dulcimer or music discussions

After playing Erin Roger's dulcimer after a Scenic Roots concert, I had to find one! My parents moved from Kansas to Missouri, and live in a town between Branson and Springfield. For my birthday, my mom surprised me by taking me out and we stopped by this little music shop called Cedar Creek Dulcimers...
