Tab for "Hail Against the Barn Door"

Dulcimer Resources:TABS/Books/websites/DVDs

Hey Dusty,

I was able to track down a version of "Squirrel Hunters" that Jim Miller tabbed out in tabledit. It's DAD capo'd to A. The B part sounds right on, if it helps you. I'm unsure whether it is permissible to share it here, so I will just tell you it is on dulcimertabs.com. Thanks again for sharing your version and knowledge. I've about got it down!

Tab for "Hail Against the Barn Door"

Dulcimer Resources:TABS/Books/websites/DVDs

I was wrong. The tab I have from Steve's book is "Squirrel Heads and Gravy". I can't believe I never noticed that "Squirrel Hunters" and "Hail Against the Barn Door" are the same tune, as I have loved the tune for years. Gettin' old I guess....Lol! Dusty, I would love to have a copy if you don't mind. Thank you so much!

Thank you Dusty. I actually think I have tab for "Squirrel Hunter" in one of Steve Seifert's books, but I will have to check after work. I'll certainly let you know.

I purchased a three legged chair similar to this one. Got mine at Target for around $20. Works great!

I Got to Spread the Word of the Dulcimer

General mountain dulcimer or music discussions

That is a a shame Jeni. There were some great acts and I may have a new favorite or two. My wife and I have loved the Carolina Chocolate Drops since we first heard them a few years ago. They stole the show at Grey Fox. New ones we really liked were Jim Gaudet, Betsie Ellis, and Della Mae. Of course, there were a lot of old favorites there too. Over 40 bands in all!

Thanks guys. John it really was pretty neat. We sat down and started playing like we had been playing together for years and the songs seemed to roll out quite nicely. It was kinda like Zen......

I Got to Spread the Word of the Dulcimer

General mountain dulcimer or music discussions

Just returned late Sunday night from the "Grey Fox Bluegrass Festival" up in the Catskills of New York. I had a ball and there were thousands attending and camping there. I think I was the only dulcimer player there! If there were others they didn't show themselves.... Anyhow, my wife and I camped beside a Canadian Bluegrass/Gospel group and they had never had any experience with a mountain dulcimer. Long story short, they asked me to sit in with them and we played several songs together. I even taught them a couple of Canadian fiddle tunes they didn't know about! They became very enamored with my dulcimer and several of them expressed interest in maybe acquiring one and using it in their music. Anyway, I had fun spreading the word and maybe made a few converts.

The official festival photographer took stills and videos of us playing and I'm hoping they post it on the festival website soon.

Cindi, I've been playing at Bluegrass jams for a few years now and am actually in a BG band with my dulcimer. I usually use the capo and if I have to play a song in a different key than I'm used to, say from D to A, I try to just move the tab up the keyboard so to speak. I noodle around until it's right in that key. If you know the song well, it's not so hard to do. Good luck!

What kinds of tunes do you most like to play on your mtn dulcimer?

General mountain dulcimer or music discussions

I like to play most anything on my MD. I have very eclectic tastes in music. Everywhere from Celtic to Hard Rock, but Celtic and very old time Appalachian music is what sounds "right" to me on the dulcimer. Good thread!

Robin,

There are a few females that do that. They use as their personnawomenlike Molly Pitcher, Mad Anne Bailey and others. Mostly women who lost their husband in battle and hadno place to go or no way to make a living, so they donned men's clothes and tried to hide obvious features and continued in their man's place in the army. Some actually got away with it!

OMG! I just realized that I said "I'd have to dig her up" when I was talking about my old picture. Mom is still kicking...:) Lisa, I do enjoy 18th century living history interpretation. I combines my love of history, camping shooting flintlocks, woods running, and many other things. I 've been doing it for over 30 years. Now, if I can only get a historical reference to a non-hammered dulcimer from around the 1760s!

It's great seeing these old photos!Mom has one around somewhere of me with my first dulcimer in 1973 I'llhave her dig up. Since Folkfan has one of her in strange cloths, I'll post one too. This is at a Living History event at Fort Frederick, MD.I'm the one on the far left. Since then I cut my hair and what was left was so traumatized it started falling out!
