That's a tough question...I have many favorites. "Positively 4th Street" springs to mind.

Bob Dylan just won the Nobel Prize in Literature. He is the first songwriter to ever win the award, and he is the first American to win it in about 20 years.

Here is the New York Times report on it, and here is NPR's version of the story.

People have been talking about this remote possibility for several years.  Dylan's lyrics have been compiled into a collection of poetry (without the music!) and college courses on poetry have included analyses of his lyrics for a couple of decades now.

But I also believe this award speaks to the strength of the folk tradition, the oral tradition, in which great bards remind us of the past, express the concerns of the present, and suggest a better future.  Homer and Shakespeare did that.  Woody Guthrie, too.  And so did Bob Dylan.  (Oh wait, I said "did," but he's still doing it, isn't he?)

What is your favorite Dylan song?  What are your favorite Dylan lyrics?  So many to choose from.  "Forever Young" still brings a tear to my eye.  It represents the best wishes a parent could offer a child.

May G-d bless and keep you always
May your wishes all come true
May you always do for others
And let others do for you
May you build a ladder to the stars
And climb on every rung
May you stay forever young
Forever young, forever young
May you stay forever young.

May you grow up to be righteous
May you grow up to be true
May you always know the truth
And see the lights surrounding you
May you always be courageous
Stand upright and be strong
May you stay forever young
Forever young, forever young
May you stay forever young.

May your hands always be busy
May your feet always be swift
May you have a strong foundation
When the winds of changes shift
May your heart always be joyful
And may your song always be sung
May you stay forever young
Forever young, forever young
May you stay forever young.
