G'day. I started learning dulcimer in mid 2001. I had tried guitar but got to 5 chords then got very stuck. I tried Mandolin ..same story. I saw a mountain dulcimer online quite by accident and fell in love with the sound... then fell more in love with it when i found out how much easier it was to learn to play. I had a dulcimer and beginners book sent Down Under and with the great support of this site have had a ball... i keep learning almost every day. I play from Tab and by ear and am only now learning (slowly) to read a little SMN.  I busk a bit at a local Nursing Home and depending on my health i play semi regularly at the Creswick Woollen Mill's large retail store in my home town. The store attracts many tourists so i get to meet lots of nice people. I am now writing my own music and am learning clawhammer banjo from a book and enjoy mucking around on my Sparrowharp (autoharp). Dulcimer playing also led me to playing a bit of Native American flute...oh and i can play some didgeridoo. I paint a little, my favourite subject being early American town and rural scenes, and do some patchwork...both are interests that came from dulcimer playing. I share my life with my littled rescue dog Murphy. I owe so much to the wonderful instrument we all love.

12/23/16 09:00:45PM @marg:

It was $30. at the book store and after Christmas will probably by half that. I don't know anything about slides or guitars but thought it would be a fun project. I send the info to the group I play with, there are 2 in the group that like all kinds of instruments and making them. This isn't really making but could give them an idea if they wanted to try the slide.

I am happy staying with the dulcimer but doesn't mean I don't go looking for an additional dulcimers. I feel like I have gotten pretty good with Christmas music, in just a few days now will need to start all over on something else.

Crazy people out in the world, stay safe and Merry Christmas

Saw this at the book store today and checked it out on line, thought it would be something you would have fun with. The video below is part 2 of a 3 part. You may have seen this already, in part 3 the person who put it together and is reviewing it said they fellow who came up with it is from your area.

Merry Christmas

11/29/16 01:20:17PM @terry-wilson:

Hi Helen,

Thanks for asking.  😊I am doing better, but for sure I will never be the same as I was 16 months ago.  Can't run anymore ,  but I never cared for that exercise anyway.  My most stressing problem is that arthritis in my fingers and hands.

But all in all, Helen, life is good and I am not about to quit living .

Yes, I am still playing at assisted living homes and for church groups .   I played this morning at an ALH.  Went really well.  I play there every Tuesday ,  and at another twice a month.

I do play dulcimer for the good folks, but mostly instrumentals.  Ninety percent of my sing along songs are with ukelele.  This morning I even played bit parts on harmonica with two songs,

I love them and they seem to really love me.  it's a good sweet feeling.

How about you, Helen?  Surely you are not hiding your great talent.

Loved your last video.  It appears everyone else did too.  Everyone loves Helen.  You are very special Helen.  Don't ever forget that.  God and your mommy and daddy created you perfectly.  No one else is quite like Helen.  Hang on to YOU, and share yourself with the lonely, sick  and aged.

Blessings always,

Terry😊

Thanks for asking, Helen.

Much much better.  I can't go out in my boat,  ride my mower, or golf, yet.  But I am real close.  No pain.  No walker.  No cane.

Only problem is my leg buckles on me quite often.  But even that's less often.

Helen, I believe you to be one of life's good guys (girls).

Terry

i just read your post where you would like to come over. I am in the Houston area if your flight takes you this way before changing to another flight. As long as I am here, I have room if you are passing by and an extra dulcimer to strum.

Christine Shoemaker
04/02/16 08:44:48PM @christine-shoemaker:

Hi Helen!  Yes, I do understand about a song morphing into something else completely unexpected!  I'm glad you went with it - the Muses generally know best, right?  I'm happy you like my new baritone Dulciborne - so do I!  inlove  To the best of my knowledge, you are correct.  Gold Tone does not do custom work on these.  I guess they made an exception for me and I am very, very grateful to Wayne for his help and guidance on this one, and to Nathan, the luthier, for all of his hard work to make it happen.  Now it's on me...the chromatic is a challenge.  Oddly enough, only when playing my older tunes.  Writing news ones is no problem.  As I'm all about writing the next song, that works just fine for me.  happys  Yes, we'll get it together one day and have our Tropical Island jam session.  Dang, we're both writing so much new material, we may need to schedule a month long session, right?  Haha!

Christine Shoemaker
03/09/16 04:50:50AM @christine-shoemaker:

That's wonderful Helen!  I'm glad you like your looper.  I have no doubt that you'll be busking with it in no time.  Have fun!  mrdance

Helen, that pedal sounds like it might be a whole new world of fun!  I'm glad that the hint about the 1+ helped.  We just had a new book to finish the publishing process today, so we're pretty excited about that (dulcimer and Native American flute).  Our real busy time doesn't start for a couple of months yet, but the preparation is rather time consuming lol.  Thanks for the kind words and keep up the great work!

Lexie R Oakley
03/04/16 12:22:21PM @lexie-r-oakley:

So great to hear your tunes Helen, I have really missed them and you.

I was taking care of my Mom after hip surgery and 1/20 I slipped on the ice and broke my knee cap, had surgery and all is going well. I just have to be patient with wearing the big bendable brace for another 3 weeks. Then I think I will be able to do strengthening exercises.

It was kinda fun healing with my Mom, we had P.T. coming to her house and I was able to hang in to help her feel better about healing. The funny part is the both of us moving around the house using walkers...you know that would make for a funny song.

I also got to introduce my dulcimers to friends and played Amazing Grace for my Mom. She is sight impaired so I had her hearing it then playing the dulcimer. It was good time. Being there and unable to drive well it was a long 2 months and I am happy to be home.

Take care and it is good to hear you play. I am just trying to catch up while healing and it is pleasant!

Your friend, Lexie

Hello Helen, thanks for the message, I generally make a point of checking the vid comments for responses, you know to sort of keep the conversations going. It would be good if there was a "comment back" thingy in the vid comments like there is on our profile pages. I do appreciate your original music, you have a special gift. I think I'll just stick to strumming other folk's stuff for the foreseeable future. Best to you.

Why thank you Helen.  You are so very kind.

Helen, I enjoy your music.  You are very brave to do what you do.  Your music is salt of the earth kind of stuff.  I view myself as just a good old boy from the deep south.   I welcome all things rock solid.  I believe I've just described you, my dear lady.   You and your music are special.
