Mark Gilston plays an English country dance from John Playford's "English Dancing Master" (1651) on mountain dulcimer.
There is quite a bit of speculation on the name of this tune. It has been proposed that it refers to "mag" or a magpie, possibly on a tree.
Another theory holds that it is "Magina cree", a name of Irish origin, where cree refers to the Gaelic chroi (as in mother, mo chroi) meaning 'dear'. Other names include "Madge on a Tree" and "Margery Cree". The Irish origin seems unlikely to me, but the true origin of the name will probably never be known.
