Vsl vs hand size

I'm sure I'll be looking for a proper instrument soon, and wanted to know more about vsl.

I understand that longer is okay for noter style, but how long is too long to form chords, if I want to give that a try?  There are no places for me to try before I buy.

When I put tested my hand spread, pinkie pad to thumb pad on my dulcimer, I could comfortably and cleanly press down a fret 1 bass, to fret 5 melody, an 8 inch spread on my three string, equal distance dulcimer.
