Can you tell me more about your equipment? What effects do you use?
I'm manipulating the sound of the dulcimer with two pedals - the Wampler Ethereal adds both delay and reverb, and the EHX Pitch Fork adds octaves and pitch shifting. I'm also looping live using the Loopy HD app on my iPad.
And of course at the end for a little extra spice I punch the overdrive on my amp. >:)

Yes, it's "sacrilege," but very pretty nonetheless. Keep it up!
by the way, that's one of John Knopf's Dulcimasters - he added the extra frets to make it chromatic :)
