Nearer My God To Thee

musician/member name: Entertainment
Duration: 00:03:35
description:
Nearer My God To Thee is a hymn written by Sarah Adams in 1841. The scriptural reference of this hymn is Genesis 28:11-12 (Jacob's dream at Bethel) When he reached a certain place, he stopped for the night because the sun had set. Taking one of the stones there, he put it under his head and lay down to sleep. He had a dream in which he saw a stairway resting on the earth, with its top reaching to heaven, and the angels of God were ascending and descending on it.

Terry Wilson:

And you stay well in Alberta.  When  I think of Alberta, I think of Neil Young’s, “For Strong Winds.”  My favorite NY song.

Hey Terry, when I think of "Four Strong Winds", I think of Ian Tyson who wrote the song and actually has lived in Alberta for about the last forty years. He parked himself in a cabin in the southwestern foothills near Longview, Alberta; my birthplace. He has been writing and performing his work for many years. A true Canadian patriot. I don't have the same strong feeling for Neil, although he did a good job on the song, he chose to follow the money and left Canada for greener pastures. Probably a good move on his part. Again, best wishes to you!

Sung and played well, Gordon! I love the story of the dance band on the Titanic playing this hymn as the ship went down. Have you ever heard Mississippi John Hurt's version of this?

Hey Steven, I don't remember throughout my church going years when we didn't sing this hymn. The sentiment behind the story of the Titanic dance band playing while the ship is sinking is huge and for some of us tearful (I admit it). And yes indeed, I have heard Mississippi John Hurt's version and I have a great fondness for that version as well, it could well be the best.
