EDIT (of earlier, incorrect comment): We play Dance of the Little Dog and we play the trad Flop-eared Mule not in AABB structure.  They may be the only two tunes with  just A & B parts where we don't use AABB structure. . . Boy, I miss porch-playing with my favorite guitar picker!  <3

I'm thinking of using the basics of Hatmaker, going to 4/4 time, adding some "vertical separation" between the two parts and seeing what happens.  I think I get to go home tomorrow and be there until later Monday so I'll have a chance to try-out some different things.

I can't remember who said, I think it was Tommy Jarrell, that his idea of a perfect tune was one that moved seamlessly from part to part. I've since strived for that ideal mostly unsuccessfully. 

Now then, Robin has a tune to where like the last line of the 2nd part is the 1st line of 1st part, or something like that.

You know what tune I'm taking about Robin? It's one of my favorite tumes of yours.

Yes, that's why I mention how it began to feel like a 'round' to me.

It's all quite beautiful and meditative.

I, too, like plenty of "vertical space" between the A & B parts!  If, for no other reason, it makes it easier to keep track of how many times through I've played each part. lol  For some reason, on this tune I'm doing good to manage the slide to start the B part and don't know whether I could manage a longer slide and stay with the tempo.  I'll play around a bit with the tune to see what comes up! 

I defer to others about how to tune to use a capo on the tune-- I don't keep one in my little bag of instrument stuff here at my folks' so can't check it out.  Even if I did have a capo here, I wouldn't really know how to check it out!  For better or worse, I love using a false nut.  :)

The dulcimer is strung with all light gauge strings-- I don't know how to indicate the tuning because the string on the "bass" side string of the instrument is tuned to the D above the other two strings (which are tuned to A).  Then, I use a false nut at fret one under the two drone strings.

Someone please correct me if I'm wrong- but I'll give it a try naming the tuning (without a capo or false nut):

starting from the normally bass string side:  EBA
 This would be key of B and played in aeolian mode with the home tonic note on the first fret, making it minor sounding.

I suspect you could also simply use a capo all the way across strings on fret 1, and could then tune the open strings DAG and play in aeolian mode.  But one would have to try it out to see if the needed notes are all there as they are in Robin's method.

This is beautiful, Robin and Mark !   The interplay between the two instruments is terrific.  Love the mournful but lovely mood.

One possible thought, since you say it's a work in progress and you are open to feedback-
the A and B part are very similar to each other.  Not sure, are they intentionally meant to sound like a round?  I was pondering how it would sound to weave a little higher on the dulcimer briefly somewhere during the B part- like maybe going up to a high B note somehow, or just a very brief higher harmony phrase in the B part on either instrument (the tune is being played in the key of B minor I think?).  Something to set the two parts as more distinct from each other and to add a poignant pull.

Freely toss this thought away if it doesn't tickle your fancy!  :)

Thank you, Jan-- we hope listening brings something positive to the listener!  I know playing the tune has been, at times, meditative for me.  And getting home to play it at home with Mark was a pleasure.

My paternal grandmother had a rather sad life in many ways. . . Though my dad's memory is even failing when it comes to long-ago memories, he has, many times, pointed out a house off Hatmaker Lane in Chillicothe OH and told me his Mom lived there for a time when she was growing up.

I can't get over how sweet this tune is Robin. Love the dissonance... and how Mark picks up on it and makes it all better...you definitely aren't standing still as a dulcimer player or musician. This is one of your best.

Very sensitive playing, Robin, and interesting arrangement, too. The soft chords that come in around 1:30 are really nice. You guys are so patient and precise and soft and tasteful. You make me feel like a bull in a china shop.
