The steel wool and vinegar is too cool! I remember hearing about using iron vitamin supliments on some woods to enhance the grain and using lye on cherry to get a deeper color.
Yeah I like to use it mostly when I have several mismatched woods. It gives a unique look, especially when you sand it partly off to give it an antique look

The soundboard is hemlock. The back and sides are birdseye maple. And the fretboard, tailpiece and peghead are persimmon. And the whole thing is dyed using a dye made by dissolving steel wool in vinegar and then about 10 coats of boiled linseed oil.
