I wanted to make a good feather quill, but the turkeys kept flying away anytime I tried to pull a feather out!  krazy

This is really informative, Bobby.  Thanks for posting this.

Good information, Bobby!  I've had quills I cut too short on the playing end and never thought of rounding them out with sandpaper-- thanks for the tip!

Thank you! Yeah, rounding the tip seems to help from splitting a little too.

This was very informative, thank you - how resp. with what do you clean and desinfect the feather?

Thank you! I just use warm water and soap after I strip the feather from the quill and remove the large end. Be careful not to get a lot of water inside the quill and make sure you let it completely dry because water will soften the quill.

Some of my archery friends have sprayed the feather with Lysol.

I've never known of anyone getting lice or anything from the feathers but you can never be too cautious.

Thanks for putting this up. I've not tried using a quill yet and it's really helpful to those of us just starting out.

You're welcome! I only recently had my "got it" moment while learning to use a quill. I hope it helps you to have fun!
