Restringing advice

Instruments- discuss specific features, luthiers, instrument problems & questions

I recently had an accident with my dulcimer and have had to restring it.

I have a Korg electronic tuner and have the two high D strings in tune. I think the middle A string is low as well as the Bass D string. I am very nervous in tightening these strings as I am afraid of breaking them as I have done before. What is the note progression approaching the Middle A string so I know I am getting close and have not gone too far. The same on the bass D string.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Using boiled linseed oil (mahogany)

Instruments- discuss specific features, luthiers, instrument problems & questions

I just bought this dulcimer guitar used (but very new). I am wondering since it is mahogany would rubbing it down with boiled linseed oil every so often help it stay new or kill it instantly?

How does humidity affect a mahogany dulcimer?

Instruments- discuss specific features, luthiers, instrument problems & questions

Hello all, I'm thinking of moving to Hawaii. Does anyone have any insights on how humidity would affect mahogany dulcimers? Is another type of wood better? Is there a specific way I should care for my instrument?

Thank you in advance!

Recommendations for new strings and new a bridge?

Instruments- discuss specific features, luthiers, instrument problems & questions

Also, is the bridge supposed to be a certain height, or is it like a guitar bridge where it is raised or lowered to fit personal preference?

Thank you all! I replaced the strings and it sounds great :) Out of curiosity does if Cripple Creek uses stains on their wood?

Recommendations for new strings and new a bridge?

Instruments- discuss specific features, luthiers, instrument problems & questions

Hi all! I recently bought a Cripple Creek dulcimer on eBay, and unfortunately, my email isn't sending through to Cripple Creek. I was wondering if anyone here would have the answer to my questions?

Are there any particular instructions on which strings to use and the preferred method of installation? I've put a new set on it, and it sounds great but would just like to know if there were any specific recommendations. The strings that came with it from the person who sold it were very obviously the wrong ones. They were even 4 different sizes.

I have another old, used, dulcimer and the bridge was either damaged or completely absent. I was wondering what the best material would be to replace it.

Metal or wood or something else entirely?
