As I understand it, Jean Ritchie saw a PA German Zitter in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in NYC and it was labeled (by the museum) a scheitholt. She used that name in talking about predecessors of the mountain dulcimer and the name stuck. This discussion is a place to talk about these instruments and their names. I hope Ken Hulme chimes in here with information about the "scheitholt" and the vaiants of the spelling. He seems to have a good handle on it. The two podcasts presented by Hearts of the Dulcimer on the "scheitholt" have renewed my interest. Also we might develop a list of known displays and locations of these instruments.
