Possible sacrilage, don't be too harsh

Was listening to a guy playing a steel guitar this weekend, and thought it would be neat to weld together a steel dulcimer. Anyone ever tried it? Any ideas about metal types or thickness? I was thinking about keeping the wooden fretboard but making the body out of polished metal to keep a little bit of a traditional look.
