Tinwhistle / penny whistles

Adventures with 'other' instruments...

Hey Bill, did you ever get that class together for playing whistle using dulcimer tab? Sounded like a really neat idea ... and one our dulcimer group here in Mt. Sterling/Winchester might like.

If you could only keep ONE of your dulcimers....

General mountain dulcimer or music discussions

That's the truth ... kinda hard for me to believe sometimes, and I'm even in the communications biz. Anyway, just thought it was cool, having just signed up and found something in common so quickly! Ken Hulme said:
Allen; Lots of local builders around the country were (and still are somewhat) known in one or a couple counties and that was about it. The Internet has radically changed the way we think about information distribution; and that's just the last 20 years. Prior to that unless you wrote and published books or magazine articles there was no other way to share.

I know I'm new to this group but after talking to a bunch of makers, many many people at the Ohio Valley Gathering and elsewhere ... this is the first time anyone's heard of Elmo Allen! I have one of his teardrop walnut models, and besides being my first (and only for now) dulcimer, it indeed does sound wonderful enough to make it a keeper. Carol Hatfield said:
I only have 2....so would keep my cherry tear drop made by Elmo Allen of KY. It's the dulcimer that was my dad's. Besides that, it it gorgeous and sounds wonderful! I treasure it.

Naming Dulcimers

General mountain dulcimer or music discussions

I never have named mine. Think about it from time to time, even have a list ... but haven't committed. It just seems so personal, almost like I'm invading their space. I can just imagine them thinking, "How dare you, a mere mortal with a pick, naming me!" Kind of funny, I know. Maybe we're still just getting to know each other, and maybe one day they'll allow me to go ahead and name them! Until then I'll shy away from it.
