Ken Hulme:

Something is amiss with the recordings  They're jammed over to the side, and I can't seem to get them to play.  I've played dulcimer with a Small Pipes piper myself; and you're right -- the combination can be magical...

I dont know how to edit my post.. ugh.  Any suggestions?

I have been learning the Scottish Small Pipes for about a year, and thought to make a recording of my piping and my Appalachian dulcimer together. The two seem to work nicely- hope you enjoy nod

Installing Question~Perfection Planetary Violin Pegs Set For Violin, 4/4

General mountain dulcimer or music discussions

Thanks for the suggestion- I will look at their page. The pegs I plan to use are for violins size 4/4 (see the pic attached), so they should be the correct size. I also will buy the reamer, that thing isn't cheep though!

Installing Question~Perfection Planetary Violin Pegs Set For Violin, 4/4

General mountain dulcimer or music discussions

Well, things are moving along with my project- the dulcimer rib sections have been bent to shape and the fretboard has been made, with some relief carving on the sides. I have ordered a set of four Perfection Planetary Violin Pegs (size 4/4) for the dulcimer tuning head that I just started to work on.

These geared tuning pegs are highly rated and I do like the traditional/classical appearance over other geared tuning pegs.

I have not installed these before, (and actually the pegs have not arrived yet) so I am looking at various tutorials on YouTube and such.

My first question is what size to drill the peg holes in the peg box before they are reamed ? I have not found any info on that! (I am ready to start carving the tuning head & scroll and want the holes bored first.)

My guess is 3/8 " but don's want to make any errors.

Does anyone have some advice as to the hole size?

Thanks!!

Tuning a dulcimer to itself

Heavens Wayne- that would make too much sense for me! (down the road, I just might cave and get a tuner..)

Cool- thanks Guy- as always you are a big help.

I think I am getting/remembering it now: 7 frets; hence the first open is C, then D; E; F; G; A; B ?

( Crazy question from a dormant dulcimer builder and knock-about-player huh!?)

Tuning a dulcimer to itself

How would I tune my dulcimer to C-G-C ? (using this tuning-to-itself style) It is the tuning for a song I love. She did capo on 1st fret to play "Rights of Man", and I MUST learn that tune!

Thanks- I am just playing notes on the melody sting, with the others as drones.

Tuning a dulcimer to itself

General mountain dulcimer or music discussions

Hi friends,

It has been ages since I have played my dulcimer, and I have since forgotten how I used to tune it to itself! I had learned some modes from a Jean Richie book I read years ago, and forgot almost everything!

The common tuning I use now is:

Press Bass String (4th) behind the 4th fret = 1st & 2nd strings open

Treble (thinnest) String (next to bass string)= 1 octave above open 4th String

-What is this mode called(Mixolydian?) is it CcG?

There was another fun tuning I used, which was great for playing "Greensleves" because it was in minor tuning (Dorian?). Does anyone know how to tune the dulcimer for that (tuning to itself?)

Hopefully this question is not too confusing!

Thanks for any help :)
