What's fer dinner?

He actually uses Chili Peppers. He uses it as a meat garnish, sided with cream cheese on crackers, and even puts a small dollop on cheese cake at times. He always says it has a little heat and a little sweet in the jelly!

Bone nut and saddle

Instruments- discuss specific features, luthiers, instrument problems & questions

Hi everyone, I need a little help. As a guitar player, I feel in love with bone nuts and saddles a long time ago. I’d like to try the bone on one of my dulcimers. Does anyone know a good source Where I can find them?

Hi Andreas. Twelve years ago I battled Gout. Then a friend told me about black cherry concentrate capsules. I bought a bottle of 1,000 mg capsules, then started taking one in the morning and one at bedtime. I have not had a bout with Gout since that time. I hope this helps.

McSpadden Questions

Instruments- discuss specific features, luthiers, instrument problems & questions

Folks, thank you for you informative responses. I used one of my guitar humidifiers in the case with each of my dulcimers. They were thirsty and I am very glad they are humidified properly now. May be my imagination but they even seem to sound a little better! Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

Thank you for sharing that wonderful story. It is all too easy to let the commercial side of the Christmas season rule our time and attitudes. My thoughts are far different on the true meaning of Christmas. I wish everyone who reads this a Christmas season of love, peace and happiness!

McSpadden Questions

Instruments- discuss specific features, luthiers, instrument problems & questions

Happy Holidays, everyone! I have a couple of questions regarding my McSpadden spruce over walnut hour glass dulcimer. First, since many dulcimers are solid wood, is humidification ever required? My solid wood guitars do, so I am curious. Secondly, I changed the strings to .12, .14, & .22 which improved the sound and volume. Is there any risk of the increased string diameter harming my instrument?

what was your first song on the dulcimer?

General mountain dulcimer or music discussions

Many moons ago my wife and I were on vacation in Arkansas when I walked into a little shop that had a cardboard dulcimer tuned to DAA and taped to a counter top. I following the instructions (also taped to the counter) and was playing "Amazing Grace" within 5 minutes.  I bought a solid walnut McSpadden from that shop. I loved it but soon grew tired of playing alone and eventually sold it to buy another guitar. I repeated the same process some years ago when I bought a dulcimer from Kurt Simmerman and ended up selling it before I learned to play it.  Yep, had to buy another guitar again. I now have my second McSpadden, my daughter and I have joined a local dulcimer club, and I am working to learn as much and as quickly as I can. I loved the sweet, soulful sound of the mountain dulcimer from day one, and I still do.  Oh, and I still love playing "Amazing Grace", it's just in DAd now.

What if you could only have one dulcimer?

Instruments- discuss specific features, luthiers, instrument problems & questions

Hi everyone. During a break at work today, I wondered what I would do if I was told I could only have one dulcimer BUT it could be any dulcimer I wanted.  I have thought about that a lot today and have come up with a few different answers.  So I am curious, if you could only have one dulcimer but it could be whichever one you wanted, which would you choose and why?

I look forward to hearing your thoughts. I apologize if this topic has been covered before, I am relatively new and haven't seen this before.  Thanks all!

Dulcimer just followed me home

Instruments- discuss specific features, luthiers, instrument problems & questions

Hi there.  I'd say it probably is a McSpadden, sure looks like one.  I'd suggest calling the folks at McSpadden Dulcimers tomorrow and give them the information from the label inside.  They can tell you for certain.  Appears to be a great find!

Congratulations!

Straight sided dulcimer?

Hi everyone. I was watching Stephen Seifert’s Strumming Techniques video and noticed he has plays a dulcimer in that video that has straight sides. Can anyone give me any details about that dulcimer? I am curious. Thanks all.

Hi everyone, I too own one of David’s dulcimers. Mine is Cedar over Ash with a Pecan fret board. Very unusual but beautiful. It is well made and has a sweet tone although it is not a loud instrument. I am a novice player who is getting back after playing guitar for a long time. The VSL is a bit long but I have larger hands. Bottom line is a Honea is, in my opinion, hard to beat for the $.

Thanks for the info. If Bob has retired, I’ll just keep saving my nickels and hope I run across someone who is willing to part with one.

Marc-Matthieu, thank you very much and I would appreciate it if you could try to contact Bob. I Imagine your McGowans are incredible with those wood combos. I heard a small sound sample of one of his dulcimers and it was terrific.

Anyone familiar with Bob McGowan dulcimers?

Instruments- discuss specific features, luthiers, instrument problems & questions

Hi everyone. This is my first post here in FOTMD but I sure am having fun so far.  I have recently seen some photos of some beautiful dulcimers built by Bob McGowan. Is anyone familiar with his work or even own one of his instruments?  I think he lived in the Memphis, TN area somewhat recently.  Does anyone know if he is stilling building dulcimers?
