Addition of 4th (Doubled Melody) String?

I've been having a conversation with my friend, Peggy Carter, about when the first doubled melody string was added to the mountain dulcimer.

I thought this would be a terrific forum to invite wisdom, experience and ideas on the subject? What do you know, what have you read, what have you heard?
