History of Cigar Box Dulcimers

Hello folks I was wondering if anyone knows more about when cigar box dulcimers became popular, and if there are any really old ones. From what I understand, in the late 1800s, there were cigar box fiddles and banjos in the south, but they were not widespread. I know that cigar box guitars have become a lot more popular recently with the rise of "DIY" aesthetics. Just wondering if cigar box dulcimers have always been around, or if it is mostly a more recent stylistic choice. Any extra info on old cigar box dulcimers would be highly appreciated also.
