Whatever happened to singing?

General mountain dulcimer or music discussions

I still visit her blog posts often over the years. They are very informative and are really helped. Its a fun blog with all the quaint pictures that go along with each song. Great teaching on how easy and quick it is to retune so you can sing and play. Love the tabs she created for each song. A vey good pace to find  some old favorites for noter drone.

Dulcimers in books & films

General mountain dulcimer or music discussions

Jim. Yes I got the name incorrect  it was the "Songcatcher".The movie had many great folk singers and a lot of the wonderful song we love and play sing . Pretty Saro being one of my favorites I guess saying it was not that good wasn't a good way of expressing the way I felt about the movie I did love all the things you talk about . It is worth watching for all the reasons you say . Don probably didn't play more the 10 seconds in the movie.  My disappointment came  near the end  and how the personal relationships ended totally not necessary and ruined the whole move for me.  But yes worth the watch just for the music.

Argh! Organizing your music!”$&?!!

General mountain dulcimer or music discussions

I was so tired of lugging all those notebooks around and a little embarrassed to show up at a jam with them. I cant play by ear I need a little help getting started sometime. i'm tired of having to purchase all that paper and ink. The last jam I went to almost everyone had their iPads. I decided to take the leap and ditch the paper. I found Mobile Sheets Pro I feel like a bird freed from the cage i used it out the last three times I played it feels great not to have to fumble through all that paper.  I'm putting away all my folders and notebooks. With my iPad its right here in my hand.

Waiter’s tray stand

General mountain dulcimer or music discussions

I love my waiter's tray stand!  I like to stand and play and the tall one is a comfortable height for me. Like Ken said mine will hold two dulcimers which is nice when you like a couple tuned to different keys. Another reason is underneath makes a good place for your case or another instrument.

Choose just ONE song for all eternity...

General mountain dulcimer or music discussions

[quote="Ken Hulme"]

Glenda -- that's a really different tune for Going Home.  Had never heard it, but I like it.

The one I'm familiar with (and play) is based on The Largo from Dvorak's From The New World symphony, with words by William Arms Fisher in 1921.  The English boy choir Libera has an outstanding version on YouTube.  I don't have the high sweet tenor voice, but do a passable baritone version.

Yes that's one of my favorites too Ken. That's why I mentioned the movie Gods and Generals so it wouldn't be confused with the other song by the same name . I liked to do a medley of both songs you cant beat the beautiful version by the boys choir could listen to it all day. It was a hard choice and glad we don't have to be put in a situation where we would have to choose.

How do I tune this Bass Dulcimer?

General mountain dulcimer or music discussions

Thanks for the reply's! Sounds like Linda's may have been the original tuning for this dulcimer. Ken It may have been set up to play Galax because of all the small  strings but hard to play because it has 6 strings the fret board is 2" wide the peg head is massive, biggest one I've ever seen  it is 9" long and 2 1/2 ' wide  3 1/2 inches deep  where it connects to the dulcimer. I named  (Baby Hewie )  for those of you that name your dulcimers. Lisa the VSl  length is 28 1/2 " nut to bridge I've always wanted a bass and thought this one may make a good one. Am I wrong in thinking that because of its size it would make a good one or does that matter?

How do I tune this Bass Dulcimer?

General mountain dulcimer or music discussions

George I have this exact same dulcimer. Iv'e had it a couple of years. I know  very little about it. How did you determine it was a bass dulcimer? mine is strung all across with what looks like .09 strings I was just thinking about turning it into a bass . strange that I should see this post! What size strings does yours have on it?  How does it sound?  It just makes seance now that this should be a Bass . Do you have any sound clips ?

Site QUESTIONS ? How do I...?

I used to be the moderator for the Indiana group but. I can no longer find it has it been deleted ?  Will I have to create a new one or is it in the files somewhere and I just  cant find it? I've not been on for a while and check in occasionally but would like to activate the Indians group. Not sure I'm in the right category Glenda
