Hi Dale, totally agree with you about friction tuners, I used em on a couple of the early dulcimers that I made thinking they would be exactly like wooden tuning pegs. So far as I am concerned they are not, and over time I replaced them. Nice looking head there !
I thought about it myself, but changing tunings in a hurry is NEXT TO IMPOSSIBLE with these tuners. When I got the new tuners in the mail, I thought they were the same type; they looked practically the same although with a smaller tension screw (accessible only by screwdriver). Jim at McSpadden assured me these will fit perfectly with very little modification, so I'm looking forward to getting these installed.
