Tabor Pipe and Drum

Adventures with 'other' instruments...

Yes, one could say a pipe produces a shrill sound,  and it could be said one can hear a mellow sound.

Keys, octaves, pipe, and the skill of the player, determines all of this.

Saying all of this, I really don't know at this point what in the h... I am talking about.

What I do understand is my new dream of playing Tabor pipe and drum, out in public one day.  I see the possibilities as being fun and everlasting.

Hey Lisa, pretty nice to be out of the closet, huh?

Tabor Pipe and Drum

Adventures with 'other' instruments...

I have a new music interest, called Tabor Pipe and Drum.  I probably don't know enough to even start a thread, as my journey only began in the past week.  I am hoping others, who know of this music, will join in and offer up their experience, opinions and thoughts.

The tabor pipe is a flute with 3 holes, two on top and 1 on the bottom, which is covered and uncovered by the thumb.

The player holds the pipe with one hand, right or left (left for me), holds the drum with the same arm, and strikes the drum with a drum stick held with the right hand.

I have already figured out that this presents itself as a real challenge.  However, I am very excited, while apprehensive, about the possibilities.  Searching YouTube, I love the music and the venues.

I am hoping that Strumelia will join in, as she is the one who initially sparked my interest.  She is certainly a "leg up" on me.

If you would like a look see, just type in Tabor Pipe and Drum YouTube, and you will find many videos.

"A new journey begins."

Dancing!...(feet as instrument)

Adventures with 'other' instruments...

Strumelia,  I Googled English Country Dancing, for clubs.  The nearest is in Griffin,  Ga., 3 hours from me.

No problem. I still plan to study much on this subject.

When I was a teen, my dad owned a roller skate rink.  Every Sat. Night he would close it for skating, and host a square dance

  Loads of fun for sure.

Strumelia,  I couldn't pick you out.  Are you filming?

Anyway, that's way way too cool.  I've got to look into this dance.   My wife and I were discussing taking up some kind of dance, recently.

Time to do some googling.

Native American Flutes

Adventures with 'other' instruments...

Oh, that's okay, Maria.  I own four HSF, and that's a plenty for now.

While I practice with most all my flutes, my HS Bm is the go to flute.  I played two songs with it yeasterday, at an assisted living home.  The 20 or so people gave me lots of smiles and hand claps.  They realize I am new to this instrument, so they seem genuinely happy with my progress.

When all of your flute playing is solo, there really no reason to have every key.  The HSF Bm is a wonderful key for others to sing along as you play.  Music is like a shot of energy to the residents.  Gotta love it.  And I do.

Maria

I cancelled my flute order yesterday.  James opened the door to this decision,  since two weeks turned into 5 weeks.

I like James, and have no I'll feelings.  He's been real busy and had an eye injury.

I'm probably going to stick to High Spirits flutes.

Native American Flutes

Adventures with 'other' instruments...

Hi Maria

No flute yet.  He said, 2 to 3 weeks.  Now a month.  Here's my take.  He's taking extra time, to build me the most magnificent C flute imaginable.

No flute in another week or so I'll start getting a tiny bit concerned.   I live a very laid back life style.  Nothing bothers me except my health.

I'll let you know.

Best regards

HI Bob

You are so welcome.  Hey, that was a nice piece of playing.   Love a good harp play.

Bob, it's nice to see someone besides me playing harp in a vehicle.  Almost 100% of my practice is while driving.  Fear not.  I'm not in your neck of the woods.

Where's your favorite place to play?

General mountain dulcimer or music discussions

Lexie R Oakley:

My favorite places to play are at home in my living room in font of my fire with my dulci' books etc, sometimes I do strum patterns with my lil' girly sitting side by side each with a dulcimer, it is our "copy me game", we have also included fret numbers.

When I have to ice or relax my injured knee, ( the knee part is healing) and practicing or working on a song alone, it is on my sofa recliner with my tabs etc next to me where I can reach both my dulcimers so I have a choice of which to play per song.

When I am studying or need help I sit in front of my computer working on instruction from a friend on this site, I have no skyp, so it is not interactive, but occasionally it has been interactive through chat.

On a sunny, less windy day I sit on my shaded deck in my glider swing, oh I can't wait for the rain to stop and the sun to shine! I love strumming for the birds that are flittering in my bushes along side my deck....sun  dulcimer

Where's your favorite place to play?

General mountain dulcimer or music discussions

My favorite place to play is in our sun room at the back of our home, situated on the banks of the Flint River, in Georgia.

I have Indian artifacts, decorative lighthouses, and a collection of bamboo fly rods and other items that I just enjoy staring at.  Through the glass windows, one can watch the birds and other animals play and hunt food.  Ducks down by the water and the occasional alligator float by.

All of this provides an amazing place to practice dulcimer and NAF, for a moment or sometimes hours.   I feel extremely blessed.

How did you first discover the mountain dulcimer?

General mountain dulcimer or music discussions

Sometime in late Spring, 2011, at a Casita travel trailer rally.

Terry and Pam Lewis were playing for the campers by a camp fire.   Terry and Pam and their music made a huge impression on my wife and I.

I waited awhile to purchase one, 04/2012, but I never forgot the music.   I would imagine that this wonderful couple has influenced hundreds of new dulcimer players.

Rookie Mistakes --

General mountain dulcimer or music discussions

This April 1st will mark my 4th anniversary.   So happy I discovered the mountain dulcimer.

Beginner mistakes?   Same as yours, all across the board.  My greatest mistake was purchasing any dulcimer other than a McSpadden in the very beginning.  Of course I didn't know of the McSpadden in the beginning.

Nothing but a flat head from now on, and no dulcimers with pins and a wrench.  I didn't change strings often enough in the beginning.  Probably because of the scroll head, or lack of knowledge.

Early on, I think I had the mind set, that "the more dulcimers I owned the better I would become".   Wrong.  Just more dulcimers to re-sell at a loss.  Hard lesson.

Another huge mistake was not learning different strum patterns in the very beginning.  I'm in a rut with one pattern, and it's a hard rut to get out of.  This rankles me often.

Anyway, @di-chitwood, this should prove to be an interesting topic.

Thank you much,

What do you aspire to with your music?

General mountain dulcimer or music discussions

Good question.  When I tuned 65 Sept. 4 years ago,  I retired, and was searching for a hobby to keep my mind sharp.  My son suggested music, so here I am.

And now, over 4 years later, I still do it to keep my mind sharp, and all of this has simply amazed me.  I would never have bet that my memory was so keen, that I would love it so much.  So, I mostly play simply because I can do it.

I have no illusions of ever recording or being like a teen age rock star where the girls swoon and cry, and holler more, more more.  Nope, not to be. Only in my wildest dreams imaginable on perhaps another planet.

However, I am more than happy to jam with my musical children and grandchildren, and some friends from church.  Family reunions too.  I am more than happy to play for my senior group at church, and occasionally at other churches.  I am more than happy to play at assisted living homes, and nursing homes.  They seem to love my music and me, and the good thing is, I don't have to be real good.  Just willing. I love to lead their bingo and keno games too.

Learning music has been very rewarding.  When someone asks me "how long you been playing that thing?", I just wish I could say "oh, around 40 years."

Terry

Hi Ken

Interesting site you have there.  I'll be checking it out.

I am not crazy about flutes made of PVC.  I gave up on the one I have, as my mouth would break out in a rash every time I tried to play it.  Too bad.  I did build a wooden mouthpiece.   Helped some.

Sewers?

OFF TOPIC discussions

Hey Folks,

Any sewing machine sewers out there?  Just curious.  I am three weeks into my sewing career.  I have a Brother CS6000i, and I love it.

Here is my story:  Recently I got into Native American Flutes.  I have ordered three so far, and none were shipped with a flute bag.  I could have purchased a bag from each seller, but decided their bags cost more than I wanted to pay.  So I says to myself, "why not make your own flute bags".

So I purchased a machine and have made 5 flute bags so far, out of imitation leather.  Hemmed three pairs of jeans and made a denim tote bag for a cancer patient.

Now I am thinking about purchasing a few flutes wholesale and selling them at Indian and Frontier festivals.  I figure if one buys one of my flutes, I'll give them the bag of their choice.  My plans would also be to make and sell tote bags of different sort.  I wouldn't be doing this just for the money, 'cause after I did the math, there's just not much money to be made (maybe).  But oh my gosh, I bet it would be fun.

The main reason I decided to post this topic, is the possibility of obtaining some ideas.

By by,

Terry

Adventures with 'other' instruments...

Jim Yates:
I recall finishing a gig with the North Shore Ramblers at the Wilno Station Inn and driving the 3 hour drive home to Port Hope in the middle of the night.  Since "hands free devices" are legal in Ontario, I put my rack on and made my way home while playing the harp.  Not sure that the police would approve, but it kept me awake.

Jim,

What you had to say reminds me of my harmonica career, which spans all of 13 months.  I would say 75% of my practice time has been while driving a vehicle.  That is literally how I have learned to play harmonica to some small degree.

Some may ask, "hey, that seems dangerous to me".   I guess it could be, but certainly not as dangerous as talking or texting on a cell phone, or playing with the radio or CD player, or road rage.

Enjoyed your story Jim.

Merry Christmas

Adventures with 'other' instruments...

Robert,

Today I made a bid on ebay on a new but old Marine Band 365, with 14 holes, key of C.  I've gone as high as I am going to bid, so I will probably not get the bid, but maybe I will.  What you had to say about your 364 pushed me over the top on this decision.

My favorite harp is a Hering Vencedora 60 reed double sided tremolo, keys of C and A.  On the C side, the 5th blow reed has failed, but I always liked the A side the best anyway.  I also have an 84 reed Vencedora, keys of C & G.  So if I need a C, I still have one.

Special 20s are my favorite ten holers.  I have Lee Oscars, Suzukis, a Marine Band, Bushman, and a couple of Seydels.  Something about the Special 20s though that float my boat.

Thats why there are so many different harmonicas how there, kind of like vehicles, no one of each makes everyone happy.

That's good news Bob.  You know, I still play dulcimer just as much as always.  But the harmonica gives me a way to make music  when it's  difficult or impossible to play dulcimer.  Put one in your pocket and away you go.

I too have a drawer full of harps, 10 holers and tremolos.  My main interest is tremolo.

Have fun!

Hi Robin,

Thanks for taking your time to provide me with this information, of what works for you.  Your Sound Cloud recording is very pure, just absolutely beautiful.  And that's not lip service,  just the truth.

While you seem to have a superior grasp on this sound thing, I am just the opposite.  I'll have to ask my son to take a look at what works for you, I know he can help me out.  He is really into pedals and sound, as he has played guitar almost all of his 42 years.  I'm sure he'll help old dad.

Meanwhile, I'll be surfing through the pages of the group you suggested.

Hi Robin, and @object Lesson,

I believe ya'll are right, it's my recording device.  I use my phone, which is a smart phone.  My wife reminded me that I am having the same problem with a harmonica.  She will tell me that a harp song is very pretty, but when I record it on my phone it sounds horrible, almost nothing like the real thing.

So, if I am to do much more recording, I really need a better recording device.

I want to thank you guys for your advice and suggestions.  By the way Robin, your Sound Cloud recording was very nice.  Thank you.
