Tell us about your VERY FIRST dulcimer

General mountain dulcimer or music discussions

Suzanne, what a wonderful post!

I tried piano in Grade 2, too shy. In Grade 11, an autoharp ---- too many strings! Ditto the 12 string guitar I bought after I retired. Pain in the ...um... wrist. Hated walking past where it hung on the wall, taunting me.

But music was still in me, wanting out. Maybe a dulcimer? Found this site, Stumelia's Noter/drone blog, maybe I could play that way.

On March 19th of this year I came home from work to find a long box with a forklift puncture in it, left on our back deck in just-above -freezing weather courtesy of a Canada Post person who chose to ignore David Lynch's "fragile" all over the box! All was surprisinly well with the Sweetwoods student dulcimer inside, and soon little tunes were startling the canaries in the next room. Like the sentimental high school girl I am on the inside, I still mark the 19th of each month as an anniversary of the beginning of a love affair with the dulcimer that shows no signs of cooling off.

Ken H., thanks for string guage calculator idea. According to that, CGG on my 27"VSL would need a 22 on the bass and 15's on the rest, rather than the 14's I have on now. Even with the wrestling match involved, it's worth a try.

Oh sorry, all,I see I put a typo in my post. I meant CGG, not CGC. Not enough coffee...

Hi Ken.Thanks, but I want to go from DAA to CGG, ( or is that Daa/ Cgg?)  just one step down. The melody strings I have on there are 14's, but I find them just a bit loose/slack/flat. Tune to DAA and this dulcimer is heaven, but I need one I can sing with more easily in my alto range.

Hi Robin, what string length is needed for playing CGC, please? Switching to heavier strings on my 27"inch dulcimer has not worked out, and I want that lower tuning for singing...thanks.

dulcimer finds its voice

Your comment inspired me to learn Pretty Saro - people often mention it, but now I know why! Such a haunting tune! Sounds lovely on the just intonated butternut you made me, Robert. Or, as lovely as I can make it ;-)

Hi. Laura Elder sings a very slow poignant version with baritone dulcimer. On you tube I think.

Tunings you like to use on your dulcimer

Marg, I agree with Dan above - just play in one or 2 tunings for now - play lots and enjoy!!

Mine is named Lark, short for Meadowlark, because the lovely joyful song means spring has arrived on the prairie.

Thanks. Tried all the browser settings every which way to Sunday, but all too big or too small, like now. Does this website support Dynamic Type?(setting on ipad for larger type). I think the old one must have, as 2 taps was all it needed. Sorry to be a pain I just have to stop for now, before I throw this thing in the Red River. There's a reason it's called a "cursor." =:-o

How does one find these external plug-ins? Is that like an app?

(Dear S., no rush to answer, please just don't give up on me yet. Playing my dulcimer is  still  my freshest  joy - 3 months today, it came! -  and it's largely because of fotmd.) Annie

Hi. I too have an ipad mini. I can now get more audios and videos, yay. And thanks for all the hard slogging to get us here!

However, I find the font on this new sight to be incredibly small. On the old site, a double tap was all I needed, but now that doesn't make enough difference, and when I use an "outward" pinch to zoom, I lose a big chunk of the line and have to keep a finger on the screen to slide the letters back and forth. Very frustrating and tiring on the eyes. I did go into my settings and try to adjust font size, but to no avail. Any ideas welcome when there's time.
