Well, I got myself a low D whistle the other day, and I'm so smitten by it! I was worried I wouldn't be able to reach the holes, or that it would require too much breath, but I'm finding it not so difficult. I like the sound so much better than the high d, that I am finding myself much more inclined to want to play it. Even the fact that it requires more breath seems to suit me better (apparently, I'm full of hot air, lol).

Lisa, I enjoy my whistle, too, when I think to pick it up. It's nice to have an instrument that I can just pick up and play, like you say.

I have a friend who is giving me a great deal on a Burke low D, and I'm excited to get my hands on it and give it a try. I'll be getting it sometime next month. I love the sound of the low d, and hope my fingers will make the stretch. The one I'm getting has holes that are slightly closer together, so it's supposed to be easier to play.

Recording multiple tracks?

General mountain dulcimer or music discussions

Thanks, Bob and Noah. I used audacity for this, layed down the first track, then added a new track. My timing is a little off, but that was my playing, not the program. I'll play with it some more, but thought I'd share what I have so far.

Recording multiple tracks?

General mountain dulcimer or music discussions

Thanks Ken, and Dusty. I'm downloading audacity now to play around with it and see if I can figure out how to layer two tracks. I do really want to do a split screen video though, as well, for YouTube.

Dusty, thanks for the tip on the home recording group, I didn't know that was available.

Recording multiple tracks?

General mountain dulcimer or music discussions

Hi friends,  I'm looking for some technical information.  I have written a composition with two voices, a duet, I suppose, and I'd like to record it.

Can anyone tell me a program to use to do this?  I'm interested in both sound and video recording. I use windows,  not mac.  And I'd like to not spend a fortune.

Thanks for any help!

Jennifer

Thank you, Jim, for that information! They sure look like they were built by the same guy. Mine does have a signature and date in pencil inside. It's very faint at this point in time. It looks to be initials, but it looks like H. B. Fleming... it's hard to tell. The date is 7-8-72. The sides are abutted at the waist as you describe, and the overlap looks to be 3/32. I do not, however, see any open square inside the scroll piece as you describe. The f holes look exactly like yours. Maybe he just changed his style a little?

I really need to get this instrument to someone who can dress or replace the frets...or figure out how to do it myself! I never play it because it buzzes so badly. It has such incredible volume and tone.

Tell me how you have yours tuned? When I first got mine, I called Mike Clemmer for advice on how to tune it, but I can't remember now what he said, lol.

Anyway, thank you for sharing your information with me! The history of my instruments is important to me. Do you know if Bill Fleming is still alive?

I love these tunes as well! This is a nice list going. One more I can think of right now, My Lagan Love. Of the Child Ballads, I think Elfin Knight is my favorite so far.

Lisa, I really like the tone of mine, too. It's also much more responsive than the Walton whistle I have.

I've only just started playing around with whistles. I got a waltons, and then a Dixon. I like the Dixon much better. But I don't know if I'll ever really love playing the whistle like I love playing the dulcimer!

How wonderful! I'm so glad you got a good one. Replacing the tuning peg shouldn't be too hard...but who needs more than 4 strings, anyway? Lol! Glad I was able to help. Enjoy!

Linda, I have a recording here of me playing the fiddleside. The song is "the ash grove". It will give you an idea of the sound. Used a capo, so was able to bypass the buzzing frets, lol.

Oh, wow! That's the same builder of mine! It's very well made, mine just has been played so much the frets are worn. Maybe ask about fret buzzing.

Linda, $100 is a fantastic price if it is playable. I bought mine from someone out of state, so wasn't able to try it out first. Will you be able to hear it played/try it before you buy it? Do you know who made it?

Hi Linda,

This particular dulcimer turned out needing the frets redressed, or possibly replaced, which I haven't had done yet. It was made in 1973 of mahogany. It has a beautiful tone with incredible sustain. Eventually, I'll get the frets fixed so it doesn't buzz so badly. It has a 29 inch VSL (vibrating string length), which makes it rather difficult to chord if you have small hands.

Happy dulcimer shopping!

I've really enjoyed looking through everyone's pictures on this forum topic!

This is my Ron Gibson teardrop. I spent a number of years living in an area frequented by barn swallows, and spent almost every morning sitting on my front porch watching them. Ron did a great job interpreting what I wanted!

Thumb pick

General mountain dulcimer or music discussions

I was wearing a notch in my thumb nail before I added the acrylic. I'm now able to play much more cleanly and with greater speed those pieces that require a lot of thumb sliding.

Thumb pick

General mountain dulcimer or music discussions

I just had an acrylic nail done on my left thumb a couple of weeks ago just for this purpose. Mark Gilston recommended it. It took some getting used to, and I had to file it much shorter than the nail tech did, but I am finding it extremely helpful!

Tune You've Had The Most Fun Playing?

General mountain dulcimer or music discussions

I derive immense pleasure from learning a new tune, whether from ear or from tab, that process brings me great joy, especially if it challenges me to reach further than I have before. Right now, I'm working on King of the Fairies and Fisher's Hornpipe, and I'm having a blast with those!

What songs were you taught in kindergarten/grade school?

General mountain dulcimer or music discussions

My favorite songs from early childhood were the ones I learned at home. Bill Grogan's Goat, you are my sunshine, hush little baby, summertime, Chattanooga choo choo.
My mother loved to sing. I also had the album "free to be you and me", which I adored.

In school, I remember skip to my lou, oh susanna, pick a bale of cotton, on top of spaghetti, and tons of patriotic and Christmas songs, my favorite of which was, o Tannenbaum, because we learned the German lyrics, which I thought was cool. I also remember learning a lot of old cowboy songs, the names of which escape me now.

Stringing a 5 string?

Instruments- discuss specific features, luthiers, instrument problems & questions

Thank y'all both! The rest of my strings come in tomorrow, lol, I'm itching with excitement. The one string sounds great, ha, really nice tone.

I don't know what the heck I'm going to do with five strings, but it'll be fun, I'm sure!

Stringing a 5 string?

Thank you very much, Bob. Now, in the photo, the way he strung that one string under the previous peg...is that correct? It doesn't seem right to me? I thought they should go over the other pegs? I hope I'm making sense.

Stringing a 5 string?

Instruments- discuss specific features, luthiers, instrument problems & questions

My new baby arrived today, and she's lovely! Unfortunately, the helpful man at the music store who helped pack it to ship to me, removed all of the old strings, put one new string on (he only had the one loop end available). He was also "kind" enough to glue down the floating bridge! Grrr.

Now I have no idea how to string this thing. Which string goes to what peg? Can anyone help me?

The glue on the floating peg was easy to unstick, fortunately.

Thanks for any help!

I was able to find a name and date inside. Unfortunately, I can't quite make out the name, but the date is 4-8-72.

George....28? You've got it bad! I just have the sniffles, you've got double pneumonia, lol.

Thanks for the info on the Davis kits. Do you know for certain he did a style with the f holes at both the top and bottom? The only ones I have seen had round holes at the top, f holes at the bottom.

Lol, I've been happy with one dulcimer for 4 years, now I'm afraid I've been afflicted with the dreaded DAD!

I guess it was bound to happen eventually.

Hi all! This is my first post here, but I've been lurking awhile. I came across a used dulcimer for sale and wondering if anyone might recognize its builder? The seller could only tell me "it's vintage", but the price is great and I'm considering getting it. Only the one picture so far, but waiting on more. Thanks for any help!
