Barre chords

I've been playing a couple of months now and am starting to get better at chords. However, the barre chords (000, 444, etc.) are a problem for me. I started out just laying one finger across the strings, which works, but of course makes chord transition awkward. So multiple fingers are probably best, but it doesn't come naturally to me. I have to spend 10 seconds or so figuring out which finger goes on which string. I assume that there are a variety of finger positions for barre chords. I guess that I'm asking which finger position is best for this type of chord, especially in regards to transitioning to to the next one.
