Advice please, re no 6 1/2 fret

When you are learning to play, 'noter/droner' style, how do you compensate for not having a  6 1/2 fret?  One can't just drop the noter to pick up that one note, finger it,  and pick up the noter again and keep in time... can they?     I would prefer to not retune from DAD.
