Singing Family of the Cumberlands
This book is Jean Ritchie's autobiography. I am lucky to have John Reynolds' first edition hardcover copy from 1955.This book has meant so much to me over the years. It literally changed my way of thinking about music. It was this book that made me realize years ago that music should be a part of our everyday lives, not something we only pay professionals to do for us.It contains the descriptive background of how certain songs were sung in the context of Jean's family and community long ago. There are also many charming stories from Jean's life that I will never forget- stories that shed light on how things were back then, and how music was part of everything in a beautiful cycle of Life. It certainly helped correct my understanding of traditional music. Not to mention what a delightful read it is!I wish this book was required reading for every school age child.Anyone who admires Jean couldn't go wrong in purchasing a copy. There are newer paperback or hardcover editions, plus used hardcover older editions aplenty online. Amazon is where I buy most of my books, used. I tend to think used books have better 'karma' than new ones. ;)
