Glad you joined. Welcome to Friends of the Mountain Dulcimer. I am hoping the mountain dulcimer is the instrument for you. For those of us who love, it is a unique and pleasant instrument to play. As you search for an instrument of your very own, let us know if you have questions. Kenl and John-c-knopf have offered some solid information. Let us know if you have questions we can answer. We are here to help each other in our dulcimer journeys.
Now there is a great bargain! John does a great job of building dulcimers, most from scratch. This McSpadden kit is a real beauty and well worth the price. If I were you I'd look into it. John makes excellent reproductions of historical dulcimers too.

Bridgette, I have a McSpadden kit-built dulcimer on eBay now, and it's at just $197.50 or so at this time. Just another possible option for you.

Bridgette, I check the House of Musical Traditions web site and they only have two mountain dulcimers at the moment. I would not recommend the Lucky Diamond dulcimer for a beginner unless you intend to play only noter/drone style as the vibrating string length (VSL) is 29 inches which is very long. The Musical Traditions is a very nice intermediate instrument. I think the price is a little high, but they have 10% off on dulcimers right now which makes it a better buy.

Welcome to FOTMD, Bridgette. It's good to have you aboard. The mountain dulcimer is a wonderful instrument with a pleasant sound. If you can travel down to Takoma Park and visit The House of Musical Traditions you will find some mountain dulcimers that you can play. The folks there have been very helpful to me over the years.
