Dar, vibrating string length isn't an issue in noter/drone style playing. The size of the dulcimer might be in terms of balancing it on your lap. The Warren May dulcimer is an excellent instrument for any style of playing. Richard didn't mention this in his post, but he is making a "beginners" dulcimer for the cost of material plus shipping. It is straight sided dulcimer. You might contact him about it. There are many noter players here and we can help you with any issues you have. Let me know if I can offer more information.
