Dennis, I wanted to do the same thing with my W May (all cherry, 1995 I think) but ended up getting a newer one in walnut that had the 6 1/2 fret and geared tuners anddecided to keep my cherry one (with the cherry carved friction pegs) as is. I agree with Dana (hey, Dana!) that it's SO much easier to have the geared tuners. Of course, some people don't care about "easier". To eachhis own!
Changeing the tuners out makes all the difference in the world. you will enjoy it much more now.

After having my warren May for awhile and not being able to keep it in tune or to be able to play I decided to change out the tuners after seeing someone in our club who did the same thing. TheseThey are precision banjo tuners. I also had the extra frets added. I am very happy with the results. I am now enjoying playing this instrument.Dennis
