The Hindman Dulcimer Homecoming is Over (this year)

General mountain dulcimer or music discussions

Rob N Lackey:
And the rocking chair in Ken's picture is the one Jean used when she came to the school.  Quite the tableau there!

Actually, it was given to Jean when she won an award (the name escapes me), and donated to HSS by Jon & Peter upon her passing. Four of those "award chairs" are in the Great Hall - James Still, Albert Stewart, and (I think) Loyal Jones.

The Dulcimer in Eastern Kentucky Videos

General mountain dulcimer or music discussions

Mitchell did a great job on those. What you don't see is the many hours of "film" that got cut. He spent a lot of time in the field "on his own hook" and edited it down very nicely.

Good job on the video Jim, I almost feel like I was there. Or, feel like I was almost there.

Look Who Came to Visit!!

General mountain dulcimer or music discussions

It's a monkey from some movie (ah, Monkeybone). He was there when we moved in and has established that window as his territory. He often plays whatever instrument happens to be displayed there. My wife and daughter though it humorous to dress the monkey as Santa and Uncle Eddie as an elf.

Well, we did actually consider decking Uncle Eddie out with Christmas lights and other seasonal adornments. What ensued was one of those conversations where we considered the likely reaction of his namesake to such shenanigans. Most of his part of the conversation is not appropriate to repeat on this forum but it did include "if I'm going to be lit up for Christmas, it won't be with blinking lights" (some descriptive terms deleted).

We did tastefully encircle the window where he looks out over town with a string of white, non-blinking lights. I'll see if we can get a decent picture tomorrow.

You took the words right off my fingertips, John.

And what do they mean by `5 times bigger'? Length? Width? Volume? If it's the latter, then you've probably more than done it.

Robin, he is indeed spending some time in Hindman. He now occupies a position of prominence in the display window seen at the left of my above picture. He did continue wandering a bit before returning to Hindman, including stops in VA and in Richmond, KY, where I hear that he drew an admiring group of dulcimer enthusiasts and got his picture in the paper.

Finally figured out how to add the pic from the Hindman stop on John's journey, I think.

Your "Dream Dulcimer?

Doggone it Paul, Your last sentence there should be the last one in this discussion. Maybe.

I hope that it isn't, though.

It's interesting how this thread has turned. Instead of talking about what you want, y'all are talking about what you have (except for Rob, and I will say that I asked him privately to kick the thread off). I'm not sure if that's the cause or a symptom of dulcimer players tending to be nice, generally happy people. In my book, that's a Good Thing, all around.

I definitely covet the BL and the Presnell.

Please, continue down whichever avenue you prefer, or both.

Your "Dream Dulcimer?

I suspect some here might have opinions about that involving Ed Thomas rolling over in his grave...

Can't say that felt he earth trembling here, but I think I did just hear a hearty chuckle from the general direction of Big Doubles. :D

Well, you are going to be shocked at this one - but here is my dream dulcimer

To go with the Aura Spectrum DII'd want a trip to the Fishman studio with a full range of original old dulcimers (Thomas, Prichard, Presnell, Tignor, Glen, Ledford, Ambergy, Mawhee, Melton etc etc) to get them all recorded and added to Aura image gallery. Then I'd have a dulcimer built for noter drone playing with a well banalced but acoustically quiet sound and a Fishman p/u. And that dulcimer with the Aura and the Bose L1p/a would be my stage set-up:

I'd have a loop pedal and general acoustic effects box (reverb, echo, chorus etc).

I don't think I would see any change from $5000 for my custom dulcimer and stage rig - and that's before adding the cost of sampling the old dulcimers in a good studio to get them loaded on to the Aura Spectrum - so perhaps it will have to stay a dream

Your "Dream Dulcimer?

General mountain dulcimer or music discussions

I casually asked the question in chat here, then decided that it would be a good topic for the general forum.

If you could have your "dream dulcimer", what would it be? Describe as fully as you wish. Body Style, woods, finish, fret pattern, headstock, tuners...the more specific, the better.

Bonnie and Clyde and the "dulcimore"

General mountain dulcimer or music discussions

I'm surprised that y'all aren't familiar with this bit of history. It is well known is these parts, maybe because Bony's favorite delcimore was made by a famous Knott county builder, Clyde's paternal uncle Wheel.
