Label reading help/late revival dulcimer

Instruments- discuss specific features, luthiers, instrument problems & questions

Not a great photos, but here you can see what I am looking at.
Again, it's a TK-4, teardrop, but looks very similar to what you show in your photos. Tail cap, nut, and bridge look the same too.

Label reading help/late revival dulcimer

Instruments- discuss specific features, luthiers, instrument problems & questions

The reason I am thinking TK-9, is I have a TK-4 sitting here with the exact same scroll head, and tuners. I have an email form Jim Woods from a month ago that reads "The TK4 was an early kit offering from McSpadden.  It makes a very nice dulcimer but with a small voice.  It was superceded in the late 70s by the TK9 which was slightly larger.  Then in the mid 80s McSpadden changed to only offering one kit model, the Sweet Song, with an hourglass shaped body and a flat peghead."

Keep us posted, please. Interesting!

TK-9? Do you know of some way I might substantiate this?

Yes, email  info@mcspaddendulcimers.com I am sure they will be happy to confirm or deny. sun

Tricked-out Music Stands

General mountain dulcimer or music discussions

Thanks Kandee! I sew, but I don't quilt. Please share a photo of yours when you are done creating. I don't have any trouble finding my stand when coming back from a break at a workshop, and I think it's fun to be different.

Tinny sound

Joe Robison:
After carefully removing the lacquer from the frets it plays well again.  It seems that pressing on the strings broke up some of the lacquer causing a slight buzz.  For this reason I always use an oil finish on my fretboards.

Joe, I'm curious, how did you remove the lacquer from the frets without damaging the fretboard?

Welcome fellow Tar Heeler. Not sure where on the OBX you are, but there is a group listed that meets in Morehead City that can probably help you out. Contact information can be found at www.everythingdulcimer.com under the Clubs tab.

Also, there is the  North Carolinians Plus group, here on FOTMD you can join, if you haven't already.

Good luck, enjoy your dulcimer journey.

Ocarinas

Adventures with 'other' instruments...

Enjoy them Terry, I know our house is happier with them playing upstairs. (They're a little loud) I always know that my son is happy when I hear him play.

Nice, a wall full of ocarina's

Shared this video with my so who plays ocarina. He told me he has seen a lot of David Erick Ramos' videos, and that the wall of ocarina's seen in this video are about 1/10th of what he owns.

I picked up one at a sale shaped like an Armadillo for my son who plays ocarina. I don't think anyone even knew what it was, because they sold it to me for a quarter. It's definitely unique!

Tricked-out Music Stands

General mountain dulcimer or music discussions

We often share photos of our dulcimers, but our overworked music stands seem to go un-noticed. I recently 'upgraded' the fabric on my music stand with leftover fabric from curtains I made last year. That got me thinking, do others do this too ? Do you have a 'skirt' for your stand? Did you make your own stand, or buy one from one of the few mountain dulcimer music stand suppliers? Please share your photos, and story, and let's give thanks to this support accessory.

Got the banjo bug. Just bought a 1930's 4 string tenor banjo. Should get it one day this week. I'll post some pictures, and hopefully a tune or two in the not too distant future. banjo

Forming a Dulcimer Group -tips?

General mountain dulcimer or music discussions

Rob N Lackey, Thanks for sharing. This is a goal for me; I think I will be ready having watched and learned from others, in 2016. There are many fun places in the Raleigh where we could do this. I'd also like to try different days, hence the Meetup platform, because that mixes it up a bit too. Some venues will be better on a Saturday afternoon, some on a Friday night, or whatever.

Where are all the dulcimers by Gary Gallier, Bonnie Carol, Jerry Rockwell, David Beede, Dwain Wilder, . . .?

Instruments- discuss specific features, luthiers, instrument problems & questions

Ken Hulme:
The problem I see with the d'Addario calculator is that it in the end presupposes you know what gauge or tension you want.  MOST dulcimer players, IMHO, don't know or care about string tension, and they want the calculator to tell them "If I tune this string to D or C, what gauge do I buy?"  Also most players don't know or care about string construction.   Personally I found the calculator difficult to use. Yes, the Strothers Calculator is a bit on the low side, recommendation-wise, but that's not bad a bad thing for the average player, especially since we invariably tell folks that it's a bit low and you can step up on or two gauges easily.

I gave up on the d'Addario calculator when I got to the part where I needed to enter tension. hairpull

Forming a Dulcimer Group -tips?

General mountain dulcimer or music discussions

Rob N Lackey:
I'd have the beginner's part 1st in the meeting.  30 minutes is a good amount of time for them.  That way the others can come in "late" and not miss anything.  New music, techniques, Q & A sessions are all good things for the meetings.  I'd see about newspaper ads or an article: "New Dulcimer Group Forming" as the headline.  A comfortable place to meet is another consideration.   Hopefully, you can get enough interest that you can have eventually have guest instructors hold workshops and concerts.  Wish you all the success in the world.

Rob N Lackey, I really like your idea about having the beginner part 1st. Since the advanced players have the option of arriving later, it takes the guilt out holding them up by us beginners.

Do any of you have experience with running a Meetup group for dulcimer jams? Our many groups in Carolina have good, reliable, meeting places, like community centers and churches, but maybe moving around to places like bottle shops, and country stores would help to recruit new players.

Recognize this Dulcimer Model or Maker?

Instruments- discuss specific features, luthiers, instrument problems & questions

It looks like 6 strings, maybe, because there are 6 machine heads. It looks like Galax to me, and there is a noter under the strings at the top. Also no 6+ fret. It's at an estate sale this weekend, so I don't know what they are asking, but it does sure look interesting. The people are moving to the beach, taking very little, and apparently not in love with the dulcimer, or never learned to play it...

General mountain dulcimer or music discussions

I was at a workshop on Saturday and the instructor was handing out little patches of moleskin for our thumbs because some of the beginners didn't have callouses on their thumbs yet. That's not my problem; I may need bigger gloves to accommodate my callouses! Just kidding.

I am about to switch to .011 on my melody string, .013 on my middle, and .024 from .012- .014- .024. My VSL is 27, but I will stay with DAd (probably spelled that wrong) as I am playing with so many other players who are in that tuning. These string gauges were recommended to me by a respected instructor at a recent workshop I attended. He played my dulcimer, appeared thoughtful, then told me to try those gauges. He's either a genius, or well, not. We'll see!
