Hello and a little info
OFF TOPIC discussions
Good news Dana. You're in my prayers.
Awesome!!! I see the 4H banners and the 4H pledge. "I pledge my head to clearer thinking, my heart to greater loyalty, my hands to larger service and my health for better living for my club, my community, my country and my world" 4H is cool!!!! Thanks for the picture. Looks like you had lots of fun with the kids
Cynthia, you are very talented. I love it that you are showing us the kantele. It's a beautiful sounding instrument. Wunderbar!!!
I just saw this. It's a beauty for sure
I knew Rob would know
A part of it sounds like Turkey in the Straw. I'm thinking Rob Lackey might know.
Delete it NOW, LOL. I saw that on FB. I almost made a comment but refrained hoping it would go away and now you posted it here. I'll get you for this
That's a hard one because I like a lot of songs. I'm working on Sourwood mountain right now. I like a lot of the hymns too like Leaning on the Everlasting Arms
Ruth, I put together a Backyard Music cardboard kit. I do believe the higher piece is the bridge...was on mine. Do what John Henry says. He gave me advice on my "build" and I've been very pleased with the results
Dusty,
The seller responded back and said it was a goof. For a while I thought maybe I'm missing some information about McSpadden
Now it appears the description on the listing says Lynn McSpadden

Below in the Category section it says Layman. Sure is confusing at best.
I saw this on ebay:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Beautiful-Layman-McSpadden-M12-W-Dulcimer-Case-/390992077152
I've guessing this is a kit. Is that correct or does "Layman McSpadden" exist?
Thanks Rob!!! How appropriate for today. I looked at the outside thermometer and it said 10 degrees.
Thanks Rob for posting these video links. I've enjoyed every one of them. I hope to make it to Hindman next year
Rob, I've watched a few of the videos. You did great!!! You all did great!!! Maybe I can attend next year. I would love to be able to do that. Thanks for sharing
That is a great resource! Thanks Ken!!!
Dan, I use a Sony video camera. I think it does a decent job. Here are two examples of which I did not modify the sound:

It's just one of those no frills hand held video cameras. I do like Sony. They make a good product.
Yes, I think the lights are coming on for me. Thanks Guy!!!
Thanks Robin, Rob, Mary and Dusty!!! I understand about sounding right to the ear. Many times when I've hit the wrong note on the melody I know that it's wrong right away. Good to know my ear still works okay. Mary I"m glad you are back. I missed you! Dusty, thank you so much!!! Learning those three chords and especially the chord shapes will help tremendously!!! I've learned a lot more about music since joining this site than I ever have. You all are great
I saw an interesting discussion on chords in the Beginner's group. A big thank you to Dusty for giving us instruction! I have a question that maybe many have been asking. Sometimes I run across some music that I would like to play but I'm not sure how to figure out the chords. I can figure out the melody. I can read notes on the staff. It sometimes takes me a bit but I get there eventually . My question is how do you figure out the chords for each measure? Also, if you only have the melody how does one figure out the chords? Sorry if these are dumb questions.
When I send something I usually ask and pay for tracking number so I can be sure it gets to its destination. I've ordered things from ebay and I haven't had a problem yet. The seller always gives me a tracking number. It comes in handy where I live since our local post office has a reputation for not being reliable. In fact, we made the news a couple of weeks ago. The Washington D.C. area was reported as having mailed delivered after 6 p.m. We were one of those areas. Fortunately that has changed and we now get mail in the afternoon. I could tell you some stories but I don't want to worry you. Give it a couple of days and then go to your local post office and ask them if there is a way they can search it.
302. Happy Birthday FOTMD and Congratulations Lisa!!!
I just measured my 1984 McSpadden's double melody strings and the distance between them is 1/8 inch but I have to say it's closer to being 3 mm. Yes, I checked with both rulers keeping in mind some members here use metric Now I wonder if Larry McSpadden used a metric ruler? Yes, I said Larry because his name is on the label
You'll occasionally see a Mize listed on ebay. They are pretty. Yours is too. I hope you post more pictures. Mize seems to like those carved figureheads for the peg head. Personally, I think I would get nervous knowing something is staring at me but that's jut me LOL. Congratulations on your acquisition!!! I hope you'll post some videos soon
Brian, it depends. I took off the extra melody string on my Cabin Creek because I was splitting the strings. It is easier to chord for me with just the three strings. My Prichard only has three strings. That's the way they made them way back when. With the piano strings Kevin put on it I do not lack volume at all. I just recently acquired a used McSpadden and have left the double melody strings on it. They are a bit closer together than the double melody strings on the Cabin Creek. I don't seem to have trouble splitting the strings on this. It's also has slots to do equi-distant but I'm not ready to venture into the dark side yet, LOL. I have taken a couple of beginner workshops and the instructor recommends taking off the extra melody string. Hey, try it both ways and see what suits you.
I second that Jan! Dusty, that's funny. I'll have to remember that one
I too have had the marks on the back of my dulcimer. I clean it up and then used Johnson Paste Wax. I know some of the old dulcimers had feet on them for playing on a table. I'm just wondering if that will make a come back and the use of a possum board to solve the sliding problems. As Frank said you would need to keep the possum board from sliding. I should use a strap because I do have the buttons. Now that warmer weather is here bare skin seems to keep my dulcimer from sliding around.
Brian, it's okay. You're doing fine. I made a couple of boo boos when putting together my cardboard dulcimer. The biggest boo boo (poor decision) was using decoupage to affix the hummingbird cutouts. It became a sloppy mess and made the paint finish not look as shiny. If I ever make another one I am not going to decoupage cutouts. I would rather just have the paint. Although some have told me the color scheme looks too much like a certain canned meat product It's supposed to be WV colors Hang in there. Post pictures when you can
