Hi Gail, It's interesting that you mention the Mel Bay book. Not sure which one it might be, but shortly after I bought my first dulcimer, a friend of mine who is a pretty good musician, gave me one that Maddie MacNeil had written. He said the guy on the cover looked like me--which, coincidentally, there is a strong resemblance.
Anyway, I've enjoyed that book and many others since then.
You say your thumb is sore. Is it from using it to strum across the strings or from holding a pick? Just curious, but I do suppose that if you're not used to it, that certainly would be reason for the soreness, especially if you're playing a lot.
Hi Gail, and welcome to the wonderful world that is known as the Friends of the Mountain Dulcimer. It is a good place to spend a few minutes of the day, to pick up some ideas and meet some good people.
