Helen, you ask a difficult question. Although there are several companies that make inexpensive dulcimers the are not American made. The quality tends to be spotty. I've played some decent ones and ones that need a good amount of work to make them playable. Few, if any, modern American luthiers make a dulcimer for under $500. Some good ones can found used. Look for the builders like Folkcraft and McSpadden. Ron Gibson and New Traditions have been getting good reviews. There are other good builders out there. I'm sure others will chime in. Without knowledge of your budget it is difficult to give specific answers.

Does anyone have suggestions for where to purchase a good quality dulcimer or which companies/luthiers to avoid?
