I know that there is a discussion whether to have these 1/2 frets on a dulcimer for starters. However, I think that it extends the musical capabilities of the instrument and I also am learning to play also an chitaronne (an archlute ) that has moving frets along the fret board! This is so that one can play in different temperaments on the instrument ( such as Vallotti, or quarter comma meantime and many others )
What a brilliant idea about coming toNonsuch Launde Abbey in octobe! I will certainly try. It will be nice to meet other players and have some fun together.
I have very little contact with other dulcimer players, which I think is a shame. You learn most from other players, although I have managed so far with books and the odd video, but you can take that only so far.
The Mountain Dulcimer is made from mahogany, alpine tonewood top and with golden planetary pegs. String length is 70 cm. Wilfried has added some really nice touches, such as the fretboard made out of different contrasting woods and the fun shaped playing-hollow. I have never seen that before and the very fine edging where the top board and the sides meet. I am very proud to own such a nice instrument. I hope that in the near future my playing skills come up to the level an instrument like this demands. But not yet, so back to practice, practice and practice.
Wilfried told me that he had made a dulcimer for you. And I agree, it is a work of art, as always with Wilfried. When he stayed with us, we spent a long time discussing dulcimers and hummels - I also have a collection! It would be good to see you at the Nonsuch Launde Abbey dulcimer weekend in October, along with several of your compatriots and a number of players from Belgium. Oh, and do take a look at my new dulcimer website revelsmusic.co.uk
Thank you both Jim and Bob. Yes, I am really proud to have such beautiful looking dulcimer, but one that sounds great as well. Now practice, practice and practice........and then some.........
Hallo Angela,
Yes, I am very Dutch! Lived most of my (i.e. working) life in the UK in Henley-on-Thames, but now in Workum in Friesland.
Nice to meet you here!
Wow this is one gorgeous instrument!!!
Looking forward to hearing it
How did I miss seeing this before? Wilfried Ulrich did a marvelous job and you will enjoy playing this wonderful instrument.

Here an example of that instrument:
