Hi Kris, and welcome to the wonderful world of the Friends of the Mountain Dulcimer.  It's a good place to come, spend some time, learn about the dulcimer, and to meet some good people.

Ben

My budget is between $150-300 My mother is Latvian. I played a Latvian version of the dulcimer known as the Kokle.

It is difficult to find mountain dulcimers in music stores and those you do find are often of questionable quality. You might look at the this website:

. Go to their Harp and dulcimer room to see what they have in stock. It is the closest place to Purcellville that I I know of that sells mountain dulcimers. You might look at Craigslist or other online sales places for a used dulcimer as well. Folkcraft and McSpadden are the two major dulcimer makers. There are many individual builders of dulcimers, some of whom advertise here on FOTMD. Sometimes folks find them in antique shops and pawn shops.

I could give you more information on what to look for if you can tell me what types of music you would like to play on the dulcimer and what your budget is.
