Bill Berg makes great dulcimers. As you shop around for used dulcimers I have a suggestion. In my opinion the Apple Creek brand is one to avoid. I had one and have known others who had one. Many of their dulcimers have poor intonation and improperly spaced frets. Their tuning machines are cheap and have been known to break.
For used dulcimers generally McSpadden and Folkcraft dulcimers usually are good unless the instrument was not well taken care of.
Welcome RobinNC to Friends of the Mountain Dulcimer from a fellow North Carolinian. Glad you joined. How wonderful that you have been gifted a mountain dulcimer. This is a great community of friendly and knowledgeable folks. Feel free to ask questions and join in the discussions. Best wishes on your dulcimer journey.
