Hi Scott, and welcome to the wonderful world of the Friends of the Mountain Dulcimer.  It's a good place to come, spend some time, learn about the dulcimer, and to meet some good people.

Ben

Welcome to the Friends of the Mountain Dulcimer. Glad you joined. Yes the dulcimer is different than a guitar. The fact that it has a diatonic fret pattern versus chromatic as in the guitar. As to which way to play, there are pluses and minuses either way.

There are those who prefer the "old" or "traditional" sound who prefer for the most part the noter drone style of playing. Others like to explore all of the things which can be done with the dulcimer and many of those will prefer chord melody style with or without fingerpicking and other playing methods. It all depends on the sound you want and the type of music you choose to play on your dulcimer. In the end there is not right or wrong style.

Thanks everyoe. I got my dulcimer(a T.K.O'Brien du-46) at wood and strings in Townsend Tenn. about a monnth ago. Quickly found out that guitar chords and dulcimer chords are not the same.lol Still trying to decide what style of playing rote I would like to take.(Chords or noter/drone) Any thoughts either way?
