Hi Scott, and welcome to the wonderful world of the Friends of the Mountain Dulcimer.  It's a good place to come, spend some time, learn about the dulcimer, and to meet some good people.

Welcome to FOTMD ScottM. It is good to have you aboard. You will find lots of information on dulcimers here. An 1840's dulcimer is likely going to be a single bout (boat shaped or teardrop) with three strings and wood tuning pegs. There are builders here who make reproductions of old dulcimers and I make reproduction of pre-dulcimer instruments; namely the Pennsylvania German zitter. Let us know if you need any advice. Please ask questions as we are always happy to help. Most of all, enjoy your dulcimer journey.
