Effect of wood type on sound

I have observed, at least from my limited experience, that lighter is better as far as both tone and volume go. But since most light woods like pine and cedar are soft, durability becomes a problem. I did a little research and found that bald cypress is light (32 pcf) with a higher crushing strength (6360 psi) than most other woods with similar density. So I bought some and tried it.

At the same time, I made to the same plan, a more typical build using Khaya Mahogany and a Sitka Spruce top. See attached photos.

Now they are finished and the tone and volume are almost indistinguishable. The Cypress instrument has a slightly mellower tone - more emphasis on the base, and the Mahogany-Spruce has a clearer tone making individual notes more distinct. But the bottom line is that the difference is very slight.

Sorry I don't have a good mike and recording equipment so I could share sound clips.

I expected a greater difference, but what do I know?
