Follow up on my backpacking stick project
I finished the stick yesterday and am pretty happy with it. It sounds great and weighs 7.2 ounces. The zither pins are a pain though and did not save as much weight as I expected.
The ukulele friction tuners I have used in the past are each only two grams heavier. They require more real estate in the head stock, but the head stock can be thinner. Also I think that a gram or two could be machined off of the knobs. That could also make then a bit smaller and allow them to be closer together for a smaller head stock.
I actually think that next time I will go back to either the uke pegs, but machine the knobs down a little, or go to some titanium cap screws next time. I might even convert this one to ti cap screws. If I decide to do that last, I'll probably fit some steel cap screws first to see how they work out.
