Strap Button Placement

I am working on an Oriole (my 21" VSL model with zither pins in the end block) and the customer (a fellow FOTMD member) wants strap buttons. She said that on her current dulcimer one is on the side of the instrument, near the end on the side away from her body. On the other end she uses the peg head.

I have never used a dulcimer strap, but plan to also install one on one of my personal instruments to try it out. What is the "normal" placement for strap buttons on the side (high, low, or middle)?

Does it make sense to use that same placement on the end with the zither pins?

The instrument looks something like the attached picture, but the zither pins are on the other end.
