Old Pine

I have access to some "old" pine for making some instruments. I know Homer Ledford in his early days believed it was the "correct" wood for instrument making. I'm wondering what tone an all pine would have? Some of the material I've dealt with you couldn't drive a nail into! I'm venturing to say it would be quite bright?
