Courage to play publicly

Two weeks ago my mother passed away.  Music therapists came twice and it was lovely.  My goal is to play in nursing homes as a volunteer but I don't have the courage to begin.  I would rate myself as a fledgling intermediate.  I can play a simple songs decently.

How did you go about playing in a facility?  I don't want it to be a formal performance where the residents are brought to the activity room.  Any suggestions? Thanks, Dulcinina
