Drones too loud

Hi guys,

I started playing 4ED, noter/drone, noting just the first (melody) string. What technique do you use so as the drones do not overpower the melody string? In vs. out strum, heavier string gauge on the first string, etc? Or is it all technique? I'm still experimenting.
