Help with a New Purchase and a thank you!

Thank you so much for adding me to FOTMD.   It's much appreciated.

Grew up where playing an instrument was "strongly" encouraged (ok, we didn't have a choice LOL)...it took a back seat with college, marriage, and child rearing...which has all been good, but it's time I get back to music....The mountain dulcimer is so beautiful and seems to fit the bill with baby steps to start with and the ability taking it much further.

There are just so many makes/models....Any suggestions for a first MD?  I have smaller hands; was figuring on a VSL probably 25-26....Looking for something I'll be happy with for many years, I don't think it's a cardboard or plywood model....but not a McSpadden either (as beautiful as they are)--any thoughts/suggestions for a happy medium I can grow with?
