half frets under a single string

I have been asked to put a 1 1/2 fret under the middle string, rather than cut all the way across the fret board, I drilled a shy 1/16 inch hole on each side  of the string at the correct location, then filed the bottom leg off the fretwire and bent it into a square shaped staple.  Has anyone else tried this approach?
