Questions about buying a dulcimer.

Hi, I am a beginner and looking at buying a dulcimer and had a few questions.

1. What is the difference between a Elliptical Mountain Dulcimer and a Hourglass Mountain Dulcimer other then the shape? Which one would be easier for a beginner?

2. I am looking at purchasing a short scale because of the shorter length. Will I regret not getting a long scale?

3. What is the upper and lower bout?
