How to Flatpick from guitar books?

I have some guitar books with chord names (but no dulcimer tabs).  I'm using them by matching the chord name on the dulcimer that is listed for the guitar. If I wanted to go a step further and do flat picking 'within' that chord - what would be your approach?  I want an option besides just strumming chords.
